Weightloss after Pregnancy

Posted by admin on 06 July 2008

One question all women want answering is how quickly they can look forward to having their old shape and weight back after pregnancy. What is certain is she will lose upwards of 14 pounds during the first 14 days after birth as the weight of the baby, amniotic fluid, placenta and other fluid is taken into account.

After the baby is born the uterus gradually reverts to its original size and hormone levels which have been elevated during the pregnancy will also gradually reduce so any additional weight also begin disappear and bear in mind that around 7 pounds of fat are added hen a woman is pregnant. This fat is meant to help women store energy while breastfeeding and is perfectly natural but how fast this weight comes off will depend on a number of factors including your genetics, overall health, diet and exercise.

Patience can be hard when you desperately want to lose weight after your pregnancy but you have to remember it did actually take three quarters of a year to put in although it can be annoying when you see women who are back to their original weight and figure within a few short months. Nature decides how quickly each person will lose the weight and some mothers hang on to the last few pounds until they have finished breastfeeding.

With today’s nutritional information readily available, more is know about what we should and shouldn’t eat so combined with regular exercise it is possible to lose the weight you gained. It is true to say that the majority of women will in fact get back to this stage within the year providing they behave as far as their food intake and exercise activities are concerned. Of course the annoying thing is when you see or hear about women that have regained their weight and shape in less than twelve weeks.

Weight loss after pregnancy can of course be difficult as most women’s bodies change in order to be a mother. In order to lose weight after pregnancy both safely, and effectively; a new mother should undertake a program of slow and steady dieting along with exercise that will produce long-term beneficial results.

In addition, dieting right after pregnancy for a new mother who is breast feeding should probably be put on hold as a breast feeding new mother needs a significant amount of energy for the continual 24 hour care of her baby that may last for a year. It may take 6 months or more after a pregnancy for the average mother’s weight loss to bring her body back to its usual metabolic rate along with the return of the normal amount of hormones that were present prior to conception but it is also important to remember that motherhood may produce some permanent changes.

The initial weight loss after birth of around fourteen pounds will just about put a dent in the total of up to thirty five pounds in weight that was gained during the pregnancy. Now whilst this weight loss after pregnancy happens immediately it can still leave up to another twenty one pounds which needs to be lost in the next half to three quarters of a year, but it must be done safely.
